A Brief Word About Words

The English language is shrinking due to spellcheckers. Often, these expert systems lists cull related words that might work better but are not as popular. Often, these artificial intelligence robots offer limited choices based on commonality of usage. Often, spellcheckers suck. Relying on them is surrendering to mechanized idiocy and acquiescing to a limited, corporate-controlled mental life.

Learn for yourself what word you mean, and how to spell the fucking thing, and what it means down to its etymology because its roots matter.  Words are subtle and complex, layered and multi-faceted. Using them well is damned hard and takes years, decades, to learn.

Read dictionaries, those old books full of words, definitions, roots, connotations, implications, ramifications, and all manner of other fascinating information.

Absorb any new word you come across, and read as widely as possible, even the dense stuff, even the stuff that makes you cry as your head splits; that is a source of wonderful treasure if you can sift it out.

Words matter more than writers do; they are what last. Take them deadly seriously and be one with words, and they will not let you down.
