Go into a store and be ignored by bored sales staff. Be brushed off by indifferent managers.
OR: Go in, find THEM, TELL them what you want from them, INSIST they deal with it right now, and KEEP AT THEM until they do it even if it’s just to get rid of you. Oh, sure, you’re a bully and a pest, they’ll say. Guess what, sparky: You got what you wanted.
That’s the difference between being Nice and being Mean.
Mean gets what it wants because it goes after it, and is only called Mean by the lazy, apathetic bastards and morons. So who cares?
Social engineering — getting people to do what you want — is not for the timid or cowed or slaves to etiquette. It’s why rich people seem so casual about trampling feelings and protocol: They are getting what they want and do not care about petty conformity.
Because of this, I am the only person in the universe ever to have purchased a book from Nebraska Furniture Mart, which does not sell books. I found a rare one being used as stage decoration for one of their displays. I insisted I was buying it, and they became distressed, calling in several managers trying to figure out what to charge me. I was polite but insistent, at one point even saying, “Well, if you don’t care, I’ll just take it with me, although I’m perfectly happy to pay for it if you name a price.” At last one manager, obviously way too busy for such shenanigans, dismissively said, “I dunno, what ever, charge him a dollar.” Thus I got not only a rare hardcover, but at a bargain price. I love ignorant apathy.

The psychopaths weaponize everything.
They also tend to prevail.
Here’s why: “Nice” people abide by the rules and constraints. They are controlled by others. They conform. “Mean” people go after what they want and the fuck GET it.
This is not to say one cannot be human and humane while also going after what you want. It just means that many will call you mean if you do so.
The root meaning of “mean” is grasping, stingy, and miserly, by the way. Ungenerous. Greedy.

Barry N. Malzberg once said, resulting in decades of blacklisting: “A contract, in the eyes of a publisher, is made to be broken. After all, what’s a mere writer gonna do? Sure can’t afford the army of lawyers you’d need if they cheat you.”‘

A horde of eager wanna-be “authors” who have no interest in writing and no awareness that the details matter at least as much as everything else explains the torrent of sub-literate drool that comprises the majority of ebooks. Trad pub moans how it used to provide gatekeepers to filter out the good stuff but its track record is raggged, spotty, and stained at best and a ludicrous scandal of incompetence when seen in the clear light of day. Most trad pub editors did not know quality if it bit off their stubbed ego and most trad publishers bragged about not reading books, which they viewed as mere product extruded for the market. What needs to happen is like-minded groups forming to sift, read, discuss, and promote what they consider good. In that way, a natural filter will form allowing us to find work we can value and cherish. The other half of that very serious coin is that writers, not authors, must create worthy, worthwhile, and well-written material for those tasteful groups to find and recommend to others. Thus a natural order will be restored or, perhaps, allowed for the first time. This is a time of huge opportunity.

What I’m currently reading, very slowly, amidst many distractions:
I am finishing The Cuckoo’s Calling as by Robert Galbraith, (J K Rowling’s mystery) because I enjoyed A Casual Vacancy so much. Have not been let down.
Also reading Death in the City of Lights by David King, historical true crime done vividly and well; interesting tale of how a serial killer was caught in Nazi-occupied Paris and how the occupation affected things, along with how the serial killer being revealed affected things.
Also Bad Glass by Richard E. Gropp, a novel about reality breaking down, or another reality protruding into ours, or something, in Spokane, WA, which has been cordoned off and evacuated. A photo-journalist goes in to see what’s what and maybe get some Pulitzer-worthy pix. What he finds is himself, via the others who choose to stay in the strangeness zone, which is very risky.
Also Black Dahlia & White Rose: Stories by Joyce Carol Oates, a collection of stories in which women are the victims of violence of many kinds at many levels. Recommended, as is her novella Black Water.
That’s what I’m currently immersed in, along with writing an erotic mystery novel, a contemporary philosophical mystery novel, and putting together the first volume of my published stories to pitch to publishers.
Interested parties please let me know.
